forgejo

Forgejo, a self-hosted software forge. Git hosting, code review, issues, package registries, wikis and CI with Forgejo Actions, behind a web interface and an API. Built like upstream's release binaries, with the web frontend built in. Two release lines, each its own APT component, for Debian 12 and 13, Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04 on amd64 and arm64.

Componentmain

follows every upstream release, minors and majors included. Currently 17.0.1.

1Trust the signing key (once per machine)

sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://deb.freshdeb.com/freshdeb-archive-keyring.gpg \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/freshdeb-archive-keyring.gpg >/dev/null

Fingerprint 3BBD F03A 9C0B F890 F8CA 9510 7595 CC55 468F 3161. How to verify.

2Add the source

sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/freshdeb-forgejo.sources >/dev/null <<EOF
Types: deb
URIs: https://deb.freshdeb.com/forgejo
Suites: $(. /etc/os-release && echo $VERSION_CODENAME)
Components: main
Signed-By: /etc/apt/keyrings/freshdeb-archive-keyring.gpg
EOF

With auto, the shell reads the codename from /etc/os-release on the machine you paste this into.

3Install

sudo apt update && sudo apt install forgejo
apt policy forgejo # expect 17.0.1-1+freshdeb~…

Before you install forgejo

Neither Debian nor Ubuntu ship forgejo. The service isn't enabled on install: until the install wizard is done, the first visitor to port 3000 configures the instance and becomes its administrator. Run systemctl enable --now forgejo when you're ready to complete it, then make /etc/forgejo read-only for Forgejo, as upstream's guide says. Upgrades migrate the database with no way back, so take a forgejo dump before a new major.

forgejo 17.0.1-1+freshdeb~deb13

How it's packaged

No distribution packages forgejo, so the packaging is ours, written the way Debian would. The build, the defaults and the layout follow upstream's wherever upstream has them.

Distributions
None ship Forgejo. The packaging is ours, laid out as upstream's installation guide describes.
Source
Upstream's release source tarball, pinned by sha256. Unlike the git tag, it carries the vendored modules and the built web frontend.
Build
Upstream's release build: its static executable with cgo for SQLite, the tags bindata timetzdata sqlite sqlite_unlock_notify, the pinned Go toolchain and upstream's version stamps. Upstream's test suite needs databases and git servers, and doesn't run in the build.
Layout
Upstream's: /usr/bin/forgejo, /etc/forgejo/app.ini, the work path /var/lib/forgejo, the git user (home /home/git) and upstream's systemd unit. forgejo admin finds them without --config or --work-path.
Release lines
main follows every release, with a new major every three months. lts stays on the current long-term support release until the next one.

Packing list

Every release line of forgejo and the distributions it's built for. Each line is its own APT component and only gets the releases it follows (main: every upstream release, minors and majors included; lts: 15.x, minor releases included). After upstream end of life it stops building but stays installable. Hatched cells have no build: usually that distribution already ships the same or a newer version itself.
