Install restic 0.19 on Ubuntu 22.04

Ubuntu 22.04 ships restic 0.12.1. The current release is 0.19.1. freshdeb builds it for jammy from upstream's release with Debian's packaging, so it replaces the distribution's package in place and updates with apt upgrade like the rest of the system.

Ubuntu 22.04 ships

1Trust the signing key (once per machine)

sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://deb.freshdeb.com/freshdeb-archive-keyring.gpg \
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/keyrings/freshdeb-archive-keyring.gpg >/dev/null

2Add the source for jammy

sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/freshdeb-restic.sources >/dev/null <<EOF
Types: deb
URIs: https://deb.freshdeb.com/restic
Suites: jammy
Components: main
Signed-By: /etc/apt/keyrings/freshdeb-archive-keyring.gpg
EOF

3Install

sudo apt update && sudo apt install restic
apt policy restic # expect 0.19.1-3+freshdeb~ubuntu22.04

Already on Ubuntu 22.04's restic? The same command upgrades it: the freshdeb version sorts higher. What's different from Debian's package.

Upgrading from restic 0.12.1

What changed between Ubuntu 22.04's 0.12.1 and 0.19.1 that you may notice. Configuration and data stay where Debian put them.

Since 0.14
Repository format 2, with compression. Repositories you create now are format 2, which restic before 0.14 can't read. Existing ones stay format 1 until you run restic migrate upgrade_repo_v2, and then the same applies.

Going back to 0.12.1

Delete /etc/apt/sources.list.d/freshdeb-restic.sources, run sudo apt update, then sudo apt install restic=0.12.1-2ubuntu0.3: apt asks before it downgrades.

Why a package

restic's own binaries are built the same way and update themselves with restic self-update. Here apt updates restic, so self-update isn't built.
